Background of the Study
Teenage motherhood is a social phenomenon that has profound socio-economic implications for young women, their families, and communities. In many parts of Nigeria, including Yobe State, teenage mothers face significant challenges as they attempt to balance the demands of motherhood with educational and employment opportunities. Early motherhood often results in the cessation of education, limited career prospects, and financial dependence, creating a cycle of poverty that impacts not only the teenage mothers but also their children (United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF], 2024).
Yobe State, situated in northeastern Nigeria, faces socio-economic challenges, including high poverty rates, limited access to education, and poor healthcare infrastructure. These challenges are particularly severe for teenage mothers, who often lack the necessary skills and resources to support themselves and their children. Teenage motherhood can lead to higher rates of school dropouts, early marriage, and poor health outcomes, further perpetuating socio-economic inequalities (World Bank, 2024).
In addition to the health risks associated with early childbearing, teenage mothers are more likely to experience emotional and psychological challenges, including depression, social stigma, and isolation. These factors can further hinder their ability to contribute economically and socially. The socio-economic impact of teenage motherhood in Yobe State is significant and warrants thorough investigation to develop targeted interventions.
Statement of the Problem
Teenage motherhood in Yobe State is a growing concern, with young mothers facing significant socio-economic challenges. Early childbearing often results in the abandonment of education and limits career opportunities, leading to financial instability and long-term economic dependence on family or social support systems.
The socio-economic consequences of teenage motherhood extend beyond the immediate challenges faced by the young mothers. Their children are also at risk of experiencing poor health, limited education, and reduced opportunities. This study seeks to investigate the socio-economic impact of teenage motherhood in Yobe State, identifying the factors that contribute to the persistence of teenage pregnancy and its long-term effects on both the mothers and their children.
